Zendesk vs Freshdesk: the honest comparison, from a partner that has migrated teams both ways

An honest Zendesk vs Freshdesk comparison from a partner that migrates teams both ways. Pricing, routing, AI, reporting, and the point where Freshdesk stops fitting.

Zendesk vs freshdesk woman holding sign

Written by a Zendesk Premier Partner that migrates teams in both directions.

Freshdesk costs less per seat. Zendesk does more per seat. Neither fact settles the question, because the price you pay for a help desk is a fraction of what it costs you when it stops fitting how your team works.

We are a Zendesk Premier Partner, so read this knowing where we sit. We have also moved teams off Zendesk onto Freshdesk when it was the right call, and we will say below exactly when that is. If you only want the short version: Freshdesk is the better pick for a small, email-first team with simple routing. Zendesk is the better pick once you need more than one channel, routing rules that follow the customer rather than the queue, or reporting an exec will actually trust.

Pricing, side by side

Freshdesk Zendesk Suite
Entry plan Growth: US$19/agent/mo Team: US$55/agent/mo
Mid plan Pro: US$55 Growth: US$89 · Professional: US$115
Top plan Enterprise: US$89 Enterprise: US$169
AI agent (customer-facing) Freddy AI Agent, 500 sessions included, then US$49 per 100 sessions Zendesk AI Agents, priced per automated resolution
AI copilot (agent-facing) Freddy Copilot: US$29/agent, Pro and above Copilot: US$50/agent
Voice Add-on Included in Suite (Talk), minutes billed
Quality and workforce tools Not included Workforce Management: US$50/agent, QA included

Prices as published on vendor sites, September 2026. Zendesk bills in USD; we invoice services in AUD.

At ten agents on the mid plans, Freshdesk Pro is about US$550 a month and Zendesk Professional about US$1,150. That gap is real. It is also the whole of Freshdesk’s argument, so the rest of this comparison is about what the extra US$600 buys and whether you need it.

Where Freshdesk wins

  • Price at small scale. Under ten agents, on email and a web form, with one or two SLAs, Freshdesk Pro does the job and the saving is meaningful.
  • Simplicity. The admin surface is smaller. A capable ops person can run it without a partner or a dedicated admin.
  • AI sessions included. Five hundred Freddy sessions on every plan is a real inclusion for a low-volume team; Zendesk’s AI agent is metered from the first resolution.

Where Zendesk wins

  • Routing that follows the customer. Skills-based routing, omnichannel routing and triggers that read customer and organisation data are standard in Zendesk from Professional. Freshdesk’s intelligent routing arrives at Pro and is queue-centric; teams with tiers, regions or product lines outgrow it first.
  • One workspace across channels. Email, chat, voice, social and messaging in one agent view with one ticket history. Freshdesk’s omnichannel story depends on Freshworks’ other products.
  • Reporting. Explore gives custom datasets and dashboards a support leader can build without an analyst. Freshdesk’s custom reporting is competent for ticket volumes and SLAs and thin past that.
  • Ecosystem. The Zendesk Marketplace is the largest in the category; the integration you need almost certainly exists, which matters more the more systems your support team touches.
  • Governance at scale. Sandbox, audit logs, custom roles, data residency and a partner network that has done your industry before. Freshdesk Enterprise covers some of this; Zendesk covers it earlier and deeper.

The point where teams switch

The Freshdesk-to-Zendesk migrations we deliver share a pattern: the team passed ten to fifteen agents, added a second channel or a second brand, and found that the routing and reporting they now needed were either missing or bolted on. The migration itself is one of the cleanest we do, because the two data models map well: agents, groups, SLAs, automations and custom fields all come across. Four weeks for most teams, six for complex ones.

The Zendesk-to-Freshdesk moves we have done are the mirror image: a team that bought Enterprise for a support operation that never grew into it and wanted the bill to match the reality. That is a legitimate reason and we will tell you if it applies to you.

How to decide in ten minutes

  1. Count your channels in twelve months, not today. One channel: Freshdesk is fine. Two or more: Zendesk.
  2. Count your routing rules. If you can describe them in a sentence, Freshdesk. If you need a diagram, Zendesk.
  3. Ask who reads the reports. If it is the support lead, either. If it is the exec team or the board, Zendesk.
  4. Price the five-year bill, including the migration you will do at agent fifteen if you pick wrong.

Frequently asked questions

Can we move from Freshdesk to Zendesk without losing ticket history?

Yes. Conversations, contacts, companies, tags and custom fields migrate; attachments too. We deliver it as part of a fixed-price implementation.

Is Zendesk overkill for a team of eight?

Sometimes. If you are eight agents on email with no growth plans, Freshdesk Pro will serve you well. If you are eight agents this year and twenty next year, buying Zendesk now saves a migration later.

Do we have to buy Zendesk licences through Gravity CX?

No. We can sell them to you at Zendesk’s list price and bundle them with the implementation, or you can buy direct. Either way the services price is the same.
