Written by a Zendesk Premier Partner that migrates teams in both directions.

Most people who search for Zendesk alternatives are already on Zendesk. They are paying for it, they are not getting what they expected, and switching feels like the fix. Sometimes it is. In our experience it is the fix about a third of the time; the other two thirds, the instance was set up in a hurry, nobody owns it, and the tool is taking the blame for the configuration.

So this guide does two things. It compares the seven alternatives we get asked about, plainly, with the price and the fit for each. And it gives you a way to tell which third you are in before you spend a quarter migrating. We are a Zendesk Premier Partner. We also migrate teams off Zendesk when that is the right answer, and each section below says when it is.

The seven, at a glance

Alternative Entry price (USD/agent/mo, annual) Best for Where it falls short Our verdict
Freshdesk Growth US$19 · Pro US$55 Small email-first teams under ~10 agents Routing and reporting past 10–15 agents; multi-channel via other Freshworks products The value pick. Right until you grow.
Intercom Essential US$29 · Advanced US$85 Product-led SaaS, chat-first, AI on a good knowledge base Per-outcome AI meter, pay-as-you-go phone and SMS, lighter email and voice The messaging pick. Model the bill first.
HubSpot Service Hub Bundled with HubSpot tiers Companies already running marketing and sales on HubSpot Support depth, routing, and reporting trail the dedicated tools The CRM-bundle pick. Good if HubSpot is already the system of record.
Salesforce Service Cloud Enterprise licensing Large teams already on Salesforce with admin capacity Cost, complexity, and the admin headcount it assumes The enterprise-suite pick. Needs a team to run it.
Jira Service Management Free, Standard and Premium tiers Internal IT and engineering service desks Customer-facing support: portals, CSAT, multi-channel The ITSM pick. Not built for external customers.
Front Per-seat plans Teams that want support to feel like email Ticket workflow, automation and reporting at scale The shared-inbox-with-structure pick.
Help Scout Per-seat plans Very small teams who value simplicity and a human tone Everything past a few agents and one channel The simplicity pick. A great first help desk.

Prices as published on vendor sites, September 2026. Zendesk bills in USD; we invoice services in AUD.

Freshdesk

The closest like-for-like alternative and the cheapest seat in the table. If you are under ten agents on email with simple SLAs, it will do the job at a third of the price. The teams that leave it are the ones who added a channel, a brand or a tier. Full comparison: Zendesk vs Freshdesk.

Intercom

Best-in-class for customers inside your product, and Fin is a very good AI agent. The cost model is the thing to understand: AI per outcome on every plan, phone and SMS pay as you go. Run the numbers at your real ticket volume before deciding. Full comparison: Zendesk vs Intercom.

HubSpot Service Hub

If HubSpot is already your CRM and marketing platform, Service Hub keeps everything in one contact record and one login, and that is worth something. It is a lighter help desk than Zendesk: routing, SLAs and reporting are thinner, and support teams over twenty agents tend to feel it. The more common pattern we see is HubSpot for sales and marketing, Zendesk for support, integrated so the data flows both ways.

Salesforce Service Cloud

The most capable platform on the list and the most expensive to run, not just to license. Custom objects, flows and validation rules give you anything you can specify, and they need someone to specify and maintain them. For a large enterprise already on Salesforce with an admin team, it is a reasonable choice. For a support team of 20–100 with no Salesforce admin, it becomes the project that never finishes. Service Cloud to Zendesk is the most complex migration we deliver, because we redesign as we move.

Jira Service Management

Excellent for what it was built for: IT and engineering teams handling internal requests, incidents and changes. It is a poor fit for external customer support. Portals, CSAT, multi-channel, and a customer-facing help centre all feel bolted on. The JSM-to-Zendesk migrations we do are teams that started internal and now support customers.

Front

A shared inbox with structure: assignments, comments, rules, and a clean email-native feel that teams coming off Gmail love. It is the right tool for a small team that wants collaboration on email without a ticket mindset. It stops fitting when you need ticket forms, skills routing, a public help centre with an AI agent, or reporting a leadership team will read.

Help Scout

Simple, humane, and quick to set up. For a two- to five-person team on email it is hard to beat. The data model is small enough that migrating to Zendesk later takes about a week, which is the nicest thing you can say about a tool you will outgrow.

When Zendesk still wins

Four situations, and if two of them are yours the answer is usually to fix the instance rather than leave it:

  • More than one channel. Email, chat, voice and messaging in one workspace with one history is where Zendesk is strongest and most alternatives are weakest.
  • Scale and governance. Twenty agents and up, multiple brands or regions, audit requirements, custom roles. Zendesk has this in the product; the alternatives mostly have it on the roadmap.
  • AI you can hold accountable. Zendesk’s AI agents and copilot are measurable per resolution and per agent, with QA and workforce tools on top. That matters once AI is handling a third of your volume.
  • The integration already exists. The largest marketplace in the category means the connector to your ERP, e-commerce platform or phone system is an install, not a project.

The question to ask before you switch

Is the problem the tool, or the setup? The symptoms look identical from the inside: routing nobody trusts, macros nobody uses, seats nobody logs into, reports nobody reads. A migration fixes none of those if the same decisions get rebuilt on the new platform.

The cheap way to find out is a health check. The free version scans your configuration read-only and scores adoption across seven domains in two minutes. The paid version puts a senior consultant inside your instance and hands you a written roadmap within seven days: what is broken, what it costs you, what to fix first. It is $999, refunded in full if it isn’t useful, and credited in full against any engagement started within 30 days. Roughly a third of the teams who do it still leave Zendesk, and they leave knowing why.

Frequently asked questions

What is the cheapest Zendesk alternative?

Freshdesk Growth at US$19 per agent and Help Scout for very small teams. Cheapest per seat is not cheapest per year once you count the migration you do when you outgrow it.

What is the best Zendesk alternative for a SaaS company?

Intercom, if your customers are inside your product when they need help. Model the AI and channel usage cost before you commit.

Can Gravity CX migrate us off Zendesk?

Yes. We do it when the health check says the tool is the problem. We would rather tell you that than run a Zendesk you resent.
